APPI Webinar - Rural Homelessness: The Hidden Truth

Homelessness looks different in rural communities. It is often hidden and there are numerous misconceptions about people experiencing housing insecurity. Learn more about how data can be collected on rural homelessness, the type of action that can be taken to address housing insecurity, and the economic impacts of ensuring the housing spectrum is met in your community.

Sydney Stenekes, Director of Homelessness Initiatives, Rural Development Network

 

Since 2020, Sydney has been leading RDN's Reaching Home program, which supports rural, remote, and Indigenous communities in responding to homelessness across Alberta. Sydney holds a Master of Science with a specialization in Risk and Community Resilience from the University of Alberta. During her graduate program, she collaborated on a research project with Kát?’odeeche First Nation, which informed her approach to community engagement, as well as her reconciliation journey. Drawing on her previous experience with the federal government and community-based research, Sydney practises a relational approach and is passionate about advocating in partnership with rural communities.

 

Trisha Hampton, Community Development Manager, Rural Development Network

Trisha leads RDN’s holistic community development efforts, addressing both social and economic issues to foster thriving rural communities. Growing up on a farm in Alberta’s Special Areas, she is passionate about rural sustainability. Trisha holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing and has worked in tourism promotion, economic development, and healthcare philanthropy. As an economic development officer, she successfully managed her community's transition from coal-fired electricity. Her strengths include creating collaborative partnerships and strategic planning, ensuring all aspects of rural life, such as housing and education, are prioritized for community viability.
