APPI Tour - Tour, Eat & the Future of Mary Burlie Park
Chinatown Tours are back with Christine Lee, RPP!
This time, with the APPI Inspiration Grant, Christine has launched a series called Chinatown Reimagined - Tours and Learning Experiences to give you different perspectives of Edmonton's Chinatown.
This program includes components of Christine's famous Chinatown walking and food tour of local businesses, coupled with a short informative session on the Future of Mary Burlie Park in Edmonton's Chinatown that will be presented by Mary Burlie's Granddaughter, Tanika Burlie herself who is a Community Engagement Director, The Mary Burlie "Black Angel" Society – The Friends of Mary Burlie Park
Tanika Burlie was born and raised in Edmonton and is the granddaughter of Mary Burlie, the Black Angel of Boyle Street. Mary understood struggle firsthand, because she grew up during the harshest racial times in America. In 1969, she brought the strength and faith of her Black American roots to Edmonton and settled in McCauley. There she saw Indigenous peoples fighting the same system she had fought against, and she was drawn to them and wanted to create something here. She was one of the first volunteers at the Boyle Street Co-op and served there as an outreach worker for 26 years, until her passing in 1996. She met every person with dignity and without judgment. Today the City of Edmonton honours her with Mary Burlie Park and with July 13, Mary Burlie Day.
The Mary Burlie Park Bridging Community Project is "A Living Bridge in the Heart of the City." As the park's restoration nears completion, this action-focused initiative brings together grassroots leaders, residents, business owners, service agencies, cultural organizations, and Elders. They share one commitment: to bring the park to life year-round through cultural programming, education and a shared approach to safety. Rooted in dignity, belonging, inclusion, cultural respect and shared responsibility, the project is building a green space grounded in community, care and culture.
