The Alberta Professional Planners Institute is offering a monetary award to assist students in attending and participating at one of the following: the APPI Annual Conference, the CIP Annual Conference, the Community Planning Association of Alberta annual conference or another approved planning conference. The award is to provide financial assistance with the applicant’s expenses related to attendance and participation at the approved conference and will be awarded prior to the conference.  

APPI is committed to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility (EDIA).  Those individuals who identify as First Nations, Inuit, Métis, LGBTQ2S+, persons with disabilities, women and other equity deserving groups, are encouraged to apply for these scholarships and awards.

This award will be evaluated based on the entirety of the application and overall merit and not judged on academics. A maximum of two (2) $2,000 scholarships will be awarded for 2025. One award will be given to an Undergraduate degree student and one award will be given to a Masters degree student.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
  • Students must be entering or enrolled in an undergraduate or master’s degree program at a post-secondary institution in Alberta, Northwest Territories, or Nunavut. Students completing their final year in 2025 are eligible to apply.
  • Students may be enrolled in an accredited planning program, an unaccredited planning program, or a planning related field of study such as: urban, rural, environmental recreation, land use, or another program of study or design.
  • Student applicants do not have to be APPI Student members to apply for these awards.
  • Submissions will be evaluated on an equally weighted basis, on creativity, financial need and relevance to the Alberta, Northwest Territories or Nunavut jurisdiction.
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Submissions are restricted to the following items and must be provided in one pdf file via the upload field below, and the file name: First Initial LastName ConfAward for example: JSmithConfAward

  1. Completed application form.
  2. The most recent university transcript or student record.
  3. A curriculum vitae or resume outlining your background and involvement in planning related activities or organizations including volunteer experience (in any sector).
  4. A written submission (no more than 500 words) consisting of the following:
    • Identifying the conference to be attended. 
    • A breakdown of the estimated costs to attend, including registration, travel, lodging and meals (meals that are not provided at the conference)
    • An expression of financial need; and, 
    • a brief description of:
      1. how the theme and content is relevant to your professional planning education and/or future practice.
      2. how your interests described above contribute to the practice of planning in Alberta, Northwest Territories or Nunavut.
  5. Declaration: Certifying that all information provided is accurate at the time of application with the applicant’s signature and the date.

All of the submission requirements will be weighted equally in the evaluation of scholarship submissions.

The Award recipients will be advised on April 8, 2025. The results will be posted on May 8, 2025 here: APPI Student Scholarships and Awards
